91ɫ��Ƭ is committed to providing an environment free from unlawful discrimination, harassment, vilification and hatred in all its forms.

The first principle of the 91ɫ��Ƭ Code of Conduct is that we are an inclusive community where everyone belongs. Our aim is to actively encourage and support the rich perspectives that cultural, religious and linguistic diversity in our student and staff body bring to our teaching, learning and research.

We know that this diversity is part of what makes 91ɫ��Ƭ excellent.

It is often our students and staff who raise awareness of these issues. Indeed, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students have been at the forefront of action against racist and discriminatory behaviours on university campuses for decades.

Yet racism and discrimination remain a threat to the 91ɫ��Ƭ community. The increase in conflict and geopolitical instability, particularly in the Middle East, has led to tensions in Australian and university communities. In some instances, local communities with ties to affected regions have been harassed or vilified. This has impacted Jewish, Muslim and other communities.

The 2025 Bondi massacre was only a few kilometres from 91ɫ��Ƭ’s main campus. This terrible event and its aftermath highlights that tackling and preventing hatred is everyone’s responsibility. Antisemitism and other forms of hatred, whether based on race, religion, ethnicity, nationality or other aspects of identity, must be strongly addressed. Racism and hatred on campus threatens the safety and wellbeing of our whole 91ɫ��Ƭ community. Our Anti-Racism and Anti-Religious Vilification Policy contains very clear expectations of our community as well as clear definitions of the harms we must avoid.

Building a culture of inclusion and safety is essential. Culture shapes whether students feel they belong in a tutorial, whether staff feel safe to speak up, and whether difference is experienced as a strength or as risk.

But culture and aspiration are not enough. We must also be accountable.

We are therefore strengthening 91ɫ��Ƭ systems that sit behind our culture and operations. This includes strengthening leadership capabilities, improving how we listen to experiences of marginalisation, using better data to assess effectiveness of interventions and undertaking continuous review of our policies and processes to ensure that they remain effective and that fairness is designed in from the start.

We are making sure that anti‑racism and anti‑discrimination sit at the centre of how we think about leadership and community at 91ɫ��Ƭ. We want to be a place where people can do their best work, which means belonging and fairness are not optional.

Our goal is that our students and staff have the most rewarding experience they can at 91ɫ��Ƭ, in a safe campus free from all forms of racism, harassment, discrimination or intimidation.
