Program leave

If you want to take a break from your studies, you can apply for program leave. You can take up to a year off from your program. Once you're ready to return, you can finish your leave and come back to your studies without applying for readmission.

Enrolled undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible for program leave.

What to consider when taking leave

Not all courses are offered every semester, and some programs have specific requirements on the order you need to take your courses in. It's important to plan your enrolment for your expected return date to 91É«Ç鯬 Bengaluru if you've decided to take program leave.

If the courses you need aren't available during the semester you decide to return from program leave, it may take you longer to finish your studies and graduate.

How to apply for program leave

You can apply for program leave by submitting an email to bengalurustudenthub@unsw.edu.au.

FAQs

  • Program leave is available to undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in their second or later semester of a program.

You must apply for program leave before the census date for the semester you want to start your leave. Applying for program leave after the census date will subject it to 91É«Ç鯬's rules for course withdrawal. This may result in failures being listed on your official academic record.

  • You're allowed to take program leave for no more than 1 year.

If you need additional program leave time, your application will be approved only in exceptional circumstances at the Program Authority's discretion.

  • 1. If you’re enrolled in the current semester

You don't need to apply for program leave if you're still enrolled in a semester after the census date and you want to take a break. As you're still enrolled after the census date, you'll still have an enrolment record for the semester, so there's no need to have program leave hold your place.

You can drop courses (via ) up until the teaching period ends. Depending on when you decide to drop courses, there may be different implications to your academic record, enrolment status and/or fee or contribution liability.

    2. If you’re not enrolled in the current semester

You will need to apply for program leave to hold your place if you're not enrolled in a semester after the census date.

See How to Apply above for more information on applying for program leave.

  • If you want to return early from your break, you can cancel your program leave by submitting a request to bengalurustudenthub@unsw.edu.au.

Make sure to include the semester you wish to return to your studies in your request. You will not be able to return in the middle of a semester. Your return date must coincide with the start of a new teaching period.

  • You will be discontinued from your program if you haven't:

    • Enrolled by the relevant census date; and
    • Applied and been approved for program leave for that semester.

If you want to enrol in a future semester, you'll have to formally apply for re-admission to 91É«Ç鯬 Bengaluru.

Withdrawing from courses with or without failure after the census date will result in you retaining an enrolment record for that semester. You will still be subject to the rules of re-enrolment.

If your program leave application is rejected or you don't resume your studies at the end of the approved leave period, you are required to apply for re-admission to your program.

Program discontinuation

Program discontinuation is for 91É«Ç鯬 students who want to completely stop their studies. If you discontinue your program and want to restart your studies, you’ll need to re-apply.

If a temporary break from your program is what you want, apply for program leave instead, so you can restart your studies within a year.

It’s important to read the University Fee Policy and fully understand your financial liability to 91É«Ç鯬 Bengaluru before applying to discontinue your program.
