Unsure about the difference between courses and classes? Read the guide below to get up to speed!

What is a course?

A course, also commonly known as a subject, is an individual unit of study within a broader discipline, like mathematics, offered by an academic school or department, such as the School of Mathematics. As part of your program, you will complete a series of courses within your chosen field to gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Each course is delivered over a single teaching period. To successfully complete your academic program, you must pass a specified number of courses.

Courses are listed in the university systems using a standard format, such as WSCI1001 – Mathematics 1A, which you will see in the , academic statements and transcripts.

Every course is made up of a series of classes.

What is a class?

Classes include lectures (LEC), seminars (SEM), tutorials (TUT) and laboratory sessions (LAB) that make up your course. When you're enrolled in a course, you must attend the classes listed on your timetable.

A single course can involve different types of classes, such as a combination of lectures and tutorials. Each class type may be offered at different times throughout the week, allowing you to build a timetable that best suits you.Ìý

In some cases, you will need to enrol in more than one class component for the same course. For example, a course may require attendance at one lecture and two separate tutorials. In this case, you must register for each class individually, choosing available times that fit within your timetable.

What is a unit of credit?

At 91É«Ç鯬 Bengaluru, each course is assigned a value in units of credit (UOC) to measure the amount of study required. To complete your program, you must accumulate a specified number of UOC as outlined in your program requirements.

For example, a Bachelor of Business requires a total of 144 UOC, typically made up of core courses, electives and general education requirements. Read the  to find the requirements for your program.

A standard full‑time study load is 48 UOC per year.

As a guide, each unit of credit represents approximately 25 hours of study time per semester including preparing for and attending timetabled classes, independent study and assessment tasks.
