Who can request to defer?

You can request to defer your offer if you:

  • Receive an offer to study at 91É«Ç鯬; and
  • Haven’t been given a deferment for the same (or a similar) degree before.

What is deferment?

Deferment allows you to delay the start of your degree for up to one year from the intake that you were offered.

Please note that offer deferral is not guaranteed and requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis dependent on the program capacity and availability.

Not your first term or semester?

If you’ve completed at least one teaching period (i.e. term or semester), you can apply for program leave instead. Program leave is available for up to one year for continuing students and can be extended under exceptional circumstances.

Exceptions for deferment

  • Co-op programs
  • One-year Honours programs, including Education (Secondary), Music and Psychological Science
  • Undergraduate Certificate programs
  • Master of Psychology
  • Graduate Diploma of Mine Geotechnical Engineering
  • Graduate Diploma in Aviation (Flying)
  • Non-Award and Cross Institutional Study
  • 91É«Ç鯬 Canberra Defence sponsored students (ADFA Trainee Officers, current serving ADF members and DCUS students).

How do I defer?

Did you apply through:

University Admissions Centre (UAC)

Once you have activated your zID, you must accept or defer your offer by the deadline stated in your offer details, or you will lose your place in the program (degree).Ìý

  1. Log in to Ìýusing your activated zID
  2. Confirm the details of your offer, including the program and commencing term, before choosing to ‘Defer’ your offer
  3. Enter the details of your citizenship and/or visa informationÌý
  4. Review the summary of your offer and decision. Ensure you read and accept the terms and conditions before clicking on 'Defer My Offer’.Ìý
  5. You will receive a response to your deferral request via email within up to four weeks of submission. If your deferment request is approved, you will receive a new offer that you need to accept in order to confirm your place.Ìý

91É«Ç鯬 Applicant Portal or Apply Online

  1. Open the and click on ‘Login/Register’
    1. If you applied via the 91É«Ç鯬 Applicant Portal, log in to your account using your registered email addressÌý[]
    2. If you applied via Apply Online, you will need to register or log in using the same email address that you used in your application. In some cases, you might need to reset your passwordÌý[]
  2. Head to ‘My Applications’ tab and review the status of your submitted applications
  3. Click on ‘´¡³¦³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ’ for the program you have received an offer for and select ‘Respond to Offer’
  4. Confirm the details of your offer, including the program and commencing period
  5. ³§±ð±ô±ð³¦³ÙÌý'Defer' to proceed
    1. If you have a conditional offer, submit the requested documents in the attachment field before deferring your offer.
  6. You will receive a response to your deferral request via email within up to four weeks of submission. If your deferment request is approved, you will receive a new offer that you need to accept in order to confirm your place.Ìý

Deferring after you've enrolled

If you've already enrolled in courses, you'll be dropped from them while your enrolment request is reviewed.Ìý

Please note:ÌýIf you cancel your deferment request after you're dropped from your courses, you'll have to re-enrol. Depending on availability, you may not be able to re-enrol in the same courses/classes.Ìý

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  • If you haven’t accepted your offer yet, you have until the specified deadline in the to request for deferral.

    If you have accepted your offer and enrolled in a course, you have until the  to request for deferral. 

    Requests submitted after these dates will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may result in your offer lapsing or a financial penalty.

  • Most 91É«Ç鯬 programs can be deferred to start in Term 1, 2 or 3. However, some courses can only start in Term 1. Reach out to The Nucleus: Student Hub for further information on enrolment restrictions.

  • No. Deferring your degree is free.

  • If you defer your offer to study at 91É«Ç鯬 and you study at an AQF Diploma level or higher during the deferment period, your deferment will lapse. You'll need to re-apply via the and declare all your studies to be considered for re-admission to 91É«Ç鯬.

    If your deferral request is approved, you must accept your new offer by the specified deadline in the .
