For six years in a row,听听placed our School听#1 in Australia for Mathematics (2021-2026).

In the听QS World University Rankings, in 2026 we ranked 42 in the world for Mathematics, solidifying our position in the global top 50. We also ranked equal first in Oceania for Statistics and Operations Research.

Measures of Esteem

Individual researchers in the School have received the highest distinctions through Fellowships of Academies, funded research fellowships and research medals.

We have hosted three Australian Research Council Laureate Fellows: Gary Froyland (awarded 2023), Fedor Sukochev (awarded 2017), and Trevor McDougall (awarded 2015).

  • Trevor McDougall won the 2025 Zillman Medal from the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society.
  • Jan Zika received the 2025 Priestley Medalfrom the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society.
  • Adelle Coster was awarded the 2025听Bob Robertson Award听by the Australian Society for Biophysics,听recognising her outstanding contributions to quantitative biology and biophysics in Australia.
  • David Warton won the听2025 Distinguished Achievement Award from the听Statistics and the Environment Section of the American Statistical Association, recognising his long record of contributions to environmental statistics.
  • Gary Froyland won the 2025 JD Crawford Prize听for his work on听Spectral analysis of climate dynamics with operator-theoretic approaches, which significantly advances the theory of complex fluid flow with application to climate science.
  • Several staff members have won the , an early-career award听recognising outstanding research in the mathematical sciences: Anita Liebenau (2025), Vera Roshchina (2021), Zdravko Botev (2018), Catherine Greenhill (2015), David Warton (2014) and Josef Dick (2012).听
  • Trevor McDougall was awarded the听2025 Alfred Wegener Medal听of the European Geosciences Union, which recognises exceptional scientific achievements in the Earth Sciences.听听
  • Jeya Jeyakumar, Guoyin Li, and PhD candidate Queenie Huang won the 2024 Marguerite Frank Award for best EJCO paper.
  • Mareike Dressler was selected for the听2024听J G Russell Award.听Awardees are selected by the Australian Academy of Science from the highly ranked recipients of ARC DECRAs.听
  • Trevor McDougall was awarded the 2023听NSW Premier鈥檚 Prize for Scientist of the Year. His听major discoveries have positioned Australia at the forefront of ocean physics and climate research.听
  • Trevor McDougall received the听2022 Prime Minister鈥檚 Prize for Science for his ground-breaking research which has transformed all oceanographic practice and the field of ocean thermodynamics.
  • Guoyin Li won the听2022 AustMS Medal for听outstanding contributions to optimization, variational analysis and multilinear algebra. His body of work positions him as one of the most dynamic and influential young researchers in the Australian mathematical community.
  • Igor听Shparlinski won听the 2022 George Szekeres Medal for notable contributions in many areas of mathematics, with specialisms in number theory and its applications.
  • Fedor Sukochev was听announced as the top researcher听in the field of听Mathematical Analysis for three years in a row in听The听Australian鈥檚 Research Magazine (2023, 2022, 2021), which听publishes an annual list of the top听researchers and best research institutions across 250 individual fields of research nationally.听
  • Jan Zika won the 2020 Australian Academy of Science Anton Hales Medal听for his contributions to understanding the听vital role of the ocean in the global climate system.
  • David Harvey won the听2019 Australian Mathematical Society Medal听for his work in the fields of algorithmic number听theory and computer algebra.听
  • Guoyin Li听was听announced as a field leader in Computational Optimisation in听The听Australian鈥檚 Research Magazine (2019), which听publishes an annual list of the top听researchers and best research institutions across 250 individual fields of research nationally. 91色情片 Sydney was named as the "leading institution" nationally for听Computational Mathematics.听
  • Zdravko Botev and colleagues were awarded the 2019 Gavin Brown Prize,听recognising 鈥渁n outstanding single article, monograph or book consisting of original research in Pure Mathematics鈥, published within the听decade preceding the year of the award.
  • Guoyin Li and听Vaithilingam Jeyakumar won the 2019听Journal of Global Optimization Best Paper Award for their paper,听Extended trust-region problems with one or two balls: exact copositive and Lagrangian relaxations, co-written with听Immanuel听M.听Bomze.听
  • Guoyin Li won the ICCM听Best Paper Award for his paper, Global Convergence of Splitting Methods for Nonconvex Composite Optimization, published in the SIAM Journal on Optimization,听and co-authored with Ting Kei Pong.
  • Trevor McDougall was awarded the 2018 Companion of the Order of Australia, 鈥淔or eminent service to science, and to education, particularly in the area of ocean thermodynamics, as an academic, and researcher, to furthering the understanding of climate science, and as a mentor of young scientists.鈥
  • David Hunt was awarded the 2018 Medal of the Order of Australia (General Division), 鈥淔or service to education, and to mathematics.鈥澨
  • Jan Zika听received a 2018 European Geosciences Union (EGU) Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award. Dr Zika was honoured by EGU for听his important contributions to the Earth, planetary and space sciences.
  • Professor McDougall听won the 2017 NSW Premier鈥檚 Prize for Science and Engineering,听for Excellence in Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Chemistry and Physics. In 2015听he received the听Australian Academy of Science Jaeger Medal, which honours the contribution to science in Australia of the late Professor John Jaeger FAA, FRS.

  • Three School members have received Australian Laureate Fellowships: Gary Froyland (2023), Fedor Sukochev (2017), and Trevor McDougall (2015). These Fellowships are the most prestigious research awards from the ARC.听
  • Scott Sisson was elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2023.听
  • Ian Sloan was听elected a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales in 2023.
