From Hogan to Cosmos: Diné Mathematics, Spirituality, and Celestial Mapping
A seminar by Dr Henry Fowler exploring Indigenous knowledge systems and their connection to mathematics, spirituality, and the cosmos.
A seminar by Dr Henry Fowler exploring Indigenous knowledge systems and their connection to mathematics, spirituality, and the cosmos.
Join us for a special seminar by Dr Henry Fowler (Navajo Technical University) exploring the deep connections between mathematics, spirituality, and culture within Diné knowledge systems.
Abstract
This presentation examines how mathematics is embedded within Diné spirituality through the human body, traditional Hogan construction, and the observation of constellations. The Hogan embodies principles of geometry, symmetry, measurement, proportion, and orientation while serving as a model of harmony and balance. It also provides a framework for understanding celestial movements, seasonal cycles, and relationships between Earth and sky. Drawing from Diné knowledge systems, the presentation demonstrates how mathematical reasoning connects people, place, and the cosmos, offering a broader understanding of mathematics as a cultural, spiritual, scientific, and relational way of knowing.
This event will be delivered in person at 91É«Ç鯬, with an online option available via Microsoft Teams. Select your preference during registration.Â
