The deep, dark ocean is inhospitable, but oases of life are sporadically鈥痜ound in reefs聽made out of聽corals and sponges.
These invertebrates live in鈥痵ymbiosis with microorganisms, which can use energy that seeps from the鈥痵eafloor鈥痶o sequester carbon. This project will analyse how聽these microorganisms鈥痗onvert the sparse resources in the deep ocean to support life and entire鈥痚cosystems.
We will explore this during deep-sea expeditions and by using鈥痵tate-of-the-art microbial community analysis. Deep-sea ecosystems have the鈥痯otential to sequester carbon for eons and the project will reveal what limits鈥痶his process and how it can be enhanced.聽
