Seagrass restoration
搁别蝉迟辞谤颈苍驳听Posidonia australis seagrass meadows helps protect marine biodiversity,聽support fisheries, and keep our coasts healthy.
Posidonia australis聽is a long-lived seagrass聽endemic to southern Australia, forming extensive underwater meadows聽across the entire southern half of Australia, from Shark Bay (Western Australia) to Wallis Lake (New South Wales).聽
In聽southeastern Australia,聽Posidonia australis mostly聽grows in sheltered bays,聽estuaries聽and coastal lakes, where its meadows play a crucial role in coastal health 鈥撀爏tabilising聽sediment,聽capturing carbon, and providing聽habitat for聽a wide range of聽marine life.聽
Once widespread,聽Posidonia australis meadows have declined sharply, particularly in urban estuaries such as Sydney聽Harbour, Pittwater, Gamay Botany Bay, and Lake聽Macquarie.聽笔辞蝉颈诲辞苍颈补听补耻蝉迟谤补濒颈蝉 is聽now listed as endangered in several NSW estuaries, with losses driven by coastal development,聽poor water quality, and聽climate-induced marine heatwaves, as well as boating activities.
Restoration is critical because once damaged,聽Posidonia australis meadows recover extremely slowly, often taking decades to regenerate naturally.聽Restoration聽efforts聽across New聽South聽Wales聽now combine several complementary approaches:
Operation Posidonia聽鈥撀燼 citizen science聽program that聽collects naturally detached 鈥渂each-cast鈥 shoots after storms and replants them into degraded areas, avoiding damage to existing meadows while engaging volunteers and local communities in restoration.
Project Restore聽鈥撀燾ombines the Operation Posidonia approach to聽scale聽up habitat recovery in Sydney聽Harbour,聽combining seagrass聽and kelp restoration聽with biodiversity聽enhacement聽of artificial substrates聽to re-establish connectivity and regenerate聽whole seascapes.
Seeds of the Sea聽鈥 a citizen-science project tracking聽Posidonia australis flowering and fruiting to understand reproductive patterns and explore future possibilities for seed-based restoration.
Together these programs bring聽together聽researchers, Indigenous Rangers, volunteers, and coastal communities to help聽re-establish聽one of Australia鈥檚 most valuable marine habitats.

Operation Posidonia is a restoration project聽where citizen scientists help to聽collect naturally detached 鈥渂each-cast鈥澛燩osidonia australis聽shoots after storms, which then get聽replanted聽into damaged meadows. This community-led approach avoids harm to existing seagrass, supports recovery of聽an聽endangered habitat, and raises awareness about the importance of seagrass in protecting our coasts.
Project Restore is a collaborative initiative聽led聽via the Sydney Institute of Marine聽Science聽restoring聽Sydney聽Harbour鈥檚聽marine habitats at scale, combining leading programs like Operation Posidonia and Living Seawalls to create a holistic, community-driven model for seascape restoration.
Seeds of the Sea is a citizen science initiative tracking the flowering and fruiting of endangered NSW seagrass聽Posidonia australis聽to guide seed-based restoration and help bring back lost meadows.
