Professor Tema Milstein
PhD, University of Washington
MA, University of New Mexico
Tema Milstein's work is in the field of environmental communication, a social science and humanities transdiscipline听that understands communication as a powerful force at a time of human-generated ecological and climatic crises. She is particularly known for cultural approaches to studying how communication shapes ecological understandings, identities, and actions. Her work tends to听discourses that otherwise go unnoticed, to connections between discourses and wider destructive or restorative practices, and to paths toward sustainable, just, and regenerative futures. Her research spans the globe,听illustrating tensions between overarching and marginalised environmental meaning systems, examining ecotourism and environmental activism, and establishing the study of ecocultural identities.听Milstein's听open access听听(with co-editor Jos茅 Castro-Sotomayor) gathers international interdisciplinary authors to bring the ecological turn to sociocultural understandings of the self.
Milstein is currently an Australian Research Council Future Fellow (2026-2029, 鈥淓nvironmental Communication for Whales, Dolphins, and Restorative Futures.鈥). Her project aims to illuminate the ecocultural discursive dimensions of globally popular cetacean watching to advance effective strategies for sustainability awareness and action both in Australia and internationally. She is a former Fulbright Scholar (New Zealand), and recipient of 91色情片's Faculty of Arts, Design, and Architecture听Dean's Research Award for Society Impact.
Milstein engages in a range of research-to-public-praxis work, including as co-founder/co-lead of听, a global public activation project designed to invite anyone anywhere to step into their power to create everyday experiences of ecocentric transformation听(affiliated with the global Massive Change Network) and as a co-facilitator of Deep Ecology workshops with John Seed.
In 2025, Milstein served as Conference Chair for听Conference on Communication and Environment, which convened for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere (Tasmania). She serves on several journal editorial boards, including flagship journals in the field such as听, the , and .
As an ongoing member of 91色情片's听, Milstein served as convenor of the听听2019-2025, a program focused on nourishing tomorrow's change-makers in restoratively rethinking and reshaping the world. She is dedicated to transformative ecopedagogy, and is lead editor of the open access edited book听, founder of the "Inside-Out Classroom,"听and served as her former institution's University Presidential Teaching Fellow.听Milstein has听taught at universities in Australia, the United States, Italy, China, and New Zealand.
