Sze-Yuan is a clinician researcher with extensive clinical experience and expertise in the fields of coronary intervention and cardiac device implantation, including novel implantable cardiac device and remote monitoring technologies. He is a Senior Staff Specialist at the Prince of Wales Hospital and is the current Director of the Coronary Care Unit. 听Prof听Sze-Yuan Ooi obtained his Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery with Honours from the University of Queensland in 1997. He is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ). Sze-Yuan held the position of Research Fellow in Cardiology at the Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Leeds, England from 2003 to 2005. He was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine with Commendation through the University of Leeds in 2008 for his thesis, 鈥淭he role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of the acute coronary syndrome鈥.
His research interests include the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis and the role of inflammation, coronary physiology, novel assessments of and modulation of the coronary microcirculation, new device technology and telehealth. Sze-Yuan has been awarded over $25M in research funding over the last 5听years.

Sze-Yuan holds a Conjoint Professor position with 91色情片 with a close association with the Tyree Foundation Institute of Health Engineering 91色情片 Sydney.听I have听been involved in many industry-driven studies involving novel stent and cardiac device technologies. He was the global Principal Investigator for the BioMonitor-2 first-in-human study of a novel implantable cardiac monitor, presenting the study findings at听CardioStim, an听International听electrophysiology and devices meeting in 2016. He was an invited speaker on the topic of implantable loop recorders and member of faculty at the 2017 US Heart Rhythm Society meeting.听

Sze-Yuan has co-designed, validated and implemented a smartphone application-based model of care, in collaboration with Prof Nigel Lovell, Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering 91色情片. A听pilot study assessing this system,听TeleClinical听Care (TCC) was completed in 2020.听In conjunction with听(co-CIA) Prof Lovell, he was听awarded $1.89M in funding from the NSW Ministry of Health to conduct a large randomised controlled trial of TCC across multiple sites in New South Wales. He (CIB) was also awarded a $1.7M MRFF Cardiovascular grant to conduct a randomised controlled trial of an iterative version of this model of care for stroke patients (TCC-Stroke). 听Sze-Yuan led the听co-design听of听a remote monitoring solution for COVID-19 patients isolating in the community (TCC-COVID).听听This system was implemented across the听South Eastern听Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) during the COVID-19 pandemic, monitoring over听9,000 patients.听In 2023,听in partnership with听Prof Lovell, we听formed a听startup company,听Apostele,听that supports this and other听planned works听that听form the centrepiece of the Remote Patient Monitoring service in the Randwick Precinct redevelopment which delivers听virtual听care to multiple patient cohorts across the SESLHD community. Sze-Yuan was a named Partner Investigator on the ARC Hub for Connected sensors for Health ($5M, Chun Wang). He was invited to co-author an American Heart Association听commissioned听scientific听statement听on听Telehealth and Health Equity in听older听adults听with听heart听failure. Sze-Yuan has been invited to听present this work at numerous meetings including听the听Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering听(ATSE)听2022 seminar,听the 45th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC2023), the St Vincent鈥檚 Hospital Research Symposium 2021,听the Pen CS 2021 National Primary Healthcare Network Conference, the National Cardiology Heads of Department meeting 2023 and as the keynote speaker at the 2024 Austrian D-Health conference.听

Sze-Yuan is the lead clinician and data custodian for the Cardiac Analytics and Innovation (CardiacAI) project.听听In collaboration with the Centre for Big Data Research in Health 91色情片 Sydney, the听CardiacAI听group has developed and is currently piloting systems that allow for the automated collection of EMR data for cardiac patients upon which data-analytics and machine learning algorithms may be applied to improve patient care.听听The听CardiacAI听data repository houses听over 8 years of retrospective EMR data as well as a nightly prospective data extract for all cardiac patients across SESLHD and the Illawarra Shoalhaven LHD (ISLHD). 听The CardiacAI group has been awarded听2听MRFF Cardiovascular听Mission听grants, an MRFF Research Data Infrastructure Grant and a 91色情片 CVMM Big Ideas grant听(total funding听>$7M)听to expand the data repository to include stroke patients, add data from 2 additional Local Health Districts in New South Wales and build machine-learning algorithms to drive clinical decision support tools.听I have听been invited to present this work at听numerous听meetings including the听NSW Cardiovascular Research Network 2022 workshop,听the 2022 Australasian Institute of Digital Health听Digital Summit,听the 2023 Australian Cardiovascular Alliance Data Dashboard workshop, the 2023 Combined NSW Research Translation Centres Cardiovascular Symposium and听the 2023 Sydney Cardiovascular Symposium.听
My Research Supervision
Sze-Yuan has supervised 3听PhD students,听1听Masters of Health in Health Data Science听and听2听Masters in Medicine student听to completion, and is currently supervising 1 PhD student and听1听Masters in Medicine Research students.
