Melanie Fentoullis is a General Paediatrician and an Associate Professor (Clinical Education Fellow) in the School of Clinical Medicine at 91色情片 Sydney's Faculty of Medicine & Health (FMH). As FMH Deputy Director of Academic Conferrals and Clinical Academic Lead for the 91色情片 Medicine program redesign (MPR) project she supports clinical learning and teaching across the 91色情片 Medicine program and leads innovation in education in the Faculty of Medicine & Health. She is an inspirational and creative medical educator who partners with students and colleagues to co-design authentic, experiential, peer-driven learning - including novel digital learning resources that support blended curricula - that effectively prepares students for clinical and professional practice.聽She supports the professional development of students and early career clinical teachers and especially fosters their skills as educators to enhance their effectiveness in teaching their patients, peers, health professional colleagues and community.

As Co-Chair of the Medical Deans (MDANZ) Clinician Educators working group and the 91色情片 Medicine representative in the Medical Deans (MDANZ) Workforce and Training Committee, Melanie has progressed work towards building and sustaining a quality Clinician Educator workforce in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. She has been a long-standing advisory聽member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Curriculum Improvement & Supervision Advisory Committee (previously the RACP Curriculum Advisory Group). She is currently an advisory member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Paediatrics & Child Health Division Basic Training Committee having previously held positions on the聽Paediatrics & Child Health Division Education Committee (PDEC).

In 2021, Melanie received the Vice-Chancellor鈥檚 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning as well as international professional recognition through Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). This recognition added to her 2019 and 2020 91色情片 Medicine Educational Excellence Awards for successful initiatives that included interactive online resources to enhance students鈥 work-place readiness; a cross-cohort peer teaching program for senior students; and responding to the pandemic crisis in medical education with an online 鈥楾ele-Hospital鈥.聽

As a 91色情片 EF Champion, Academic Co-Lead of the School of Clinical Medicine Clinical Teachers Community of Practice, 91色情片 Academic Mentor, 91色情片 Experienced Peer Reviewer of Teaching, 91色情片 FMH Peer Support of Educators Champion and as an Associate Fellow of AMEE - The International Association for Health Professions Education (AFAMEE) and the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (AFANZAHPE) she is a strong advocate for teaching and the Education Focussed (EF) model campus-wide collaborating with her colleagues across 91色情片 and beyond.

My Teaching

鈥嬧赌As an Associate Professor (Clinical Education Fellow) I support clinical learning and teaching across the 91色情片 Medicine Program and lead innovation in education in the Faculty of Medicine and Health聽with my roles as:

Leading the design and implementation of the 91色情片 Advantage accredited 聽and as current co-lead for the review and renewal of the FMH Clinical Medical Education Program C-MED, I support the professional development of clinical teachers - across the continuum (students and early career clinical teachers to established clinician educators) - to enhance their skills as educators.

My teaching interests combine the areas of patient education, clinical teaching / clinician education, professionalism, professional identity formation and faculty development.聽

Teaching Context and Philosophy聽

I鈥痑m a strong鈥痑dvocate for supporting student and staff wellbeing and fostering their professional development within respectful, collegial and inclusive learning and work environments.聽

The concepts of 鈥榓ko鈥, demonstrating teacher vulnerability and role modelling a growth mindset, and that of ensuring a 鈥榬elentless welcome鈥 for our students all underpin my teaching philosophy - to embrace diversity and create鈥痯edagogical warmth鈥爐hat ensures accountable and inclusive learning environments鈥痺ithin all learning modalities鈥痑nd for all our students.聽

As a Clinician and Clinician Educator, I want my students 鈥 our future clinicians 鈥 to embrace the challenge of life-long learning and improvement,鈥痵o they can provide, and advocate for, the best possible care for all their patients and our community.聽

I see clinical workplaces as challenging environments, where medical and health staff must address many competing, often time-critical, demands to deliver safe and high-quality patient care.聽

I therefore believe it is crucial that our students develop the diverse clinical competencies and skills they need to thrive, not just survive, in such dynamic workplaces. 聽
