Associate Professor Mark Ian Jones
PhD (Design History) 91色情片;
BArch (Hons 1) UTS
I am a design historian, Chartered Architect, and academic leader in the School of Art & Design at 91色情片 Sydney. I currently serve as Deputy Academic Lead, Student Experience Program in the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education portfolio, supporting institution-wide transformation of assessment and feedback practices across programs and curricula. I have previously held several senior academic leadership roles at 91色情片 including 91色情片 Nexus Fellow (2024鈥25), Faculty of Arts, design and Architecture Director Education Innovation (2021), and Faculty of Art and Design Deputy Head of School (Design) (2016-21). My expertise spans curriculum innovation, program-level assessment, design education, assurance of learning, and the implications of artificial intelligence for higher education.
My research examines transnational design exchange, cultural diplomacy, exhibitions, archives, and the circulation of modern design ideas in the twentieth century. I am particularly interested in how design ideas move between nations, institutions, media, and everyday life, and how these exchanges shape cultural identities and historical narratives. My work has challenged established histories of Swedish and Scandinavian design by revealing alternative and previously marginalised histories that complicate canonical understandings of Nordic modernism and its international reception.
This research culminated in my sole-authored monograph Vicke Lindstrand On the Periphery: Mid-twentieth Century Swedish Design and the Reception of Vicke Lindstrand (Uppsala University Press, 2016), which has contributed to international scholarship on Scandinavian design and transnational design history. My subsequent research has expanded to examine Nordic and Italian design relations with Australia and the role of exhibitions, migration, commerce, and public culture in shaping postwar Australian modernity.
I am Lead Chief Investigator on the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project Transforming Australian Design Cultures Through the Department Store 1954鈥75 (2026鈥28), undertaken in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum and Art Gallery of New South Wales. The project investigates the role of department stores, particularly David Jones, in the dissemination of international design ideas and modern lifestyles in postwar Australia through exhibitions, archives, and public culture.
My research has led to collaborations with museums and cultural institutions through exhibitions, fellowships, publications, commissions, public lectures, and media engagement in Australia and internationally. I have delivered invited keynotes and presentations for museums, embassies, universities, and cultural institutions, and my work has been featured through public programs and media in Australia and Sweden. Between 2009鈥12 I was a Swedish Institute Guest Researcher at Uppsala University, and in 2022鈥23 I was a MAAS Powerhouse Museum Visiting Research Fellow.
Alongside my academic career, I maintain an active architectural practice as principal of Jones Architecture, a Sydney-based studio established in 1995. My professional work spans residential, public, retail, and interior projects in Australia and internationally, with over AUD $40 million of completed built work. My dual background in design practice and design history informs my interdisciplinary approach to research, teaching, and public engagement.

My current research examines Swedish and Australian design history, transnational design exchange, and design diplomacy between 1945 and 1975. I am currently Lead Chief Investigator on the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project Transforming Australian Design Cultures Through the Department Store 1954鈥75 (2026鈥28), undertaken in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum and Art Gallery NSW. The project investigates the transmission, diffusion, and promotion of international design ideas through department store exhibitions in postwar Australia, positioning David Jones鈥 sustained program of international exhibitions and expositions as a major case study in understanding nation building, migration, cultural exchange, and the dissemination of modern design cultures in Australia.
My earlier contributions to design history generated new knowledge on Swedish design history, design as national identity, and the Swedish designer Vicke Lindstrand through a body of research disseminated across a monograph, book chapters, journal articles, exhibition projects, catalogues, and public programs in both Sweden and Australia. As a leading figure in Australia in research into postwar Swedish modernism, my work emerges from an extensive design industry background and over fifteen years of sustained research into Swedish and Scandinavian design histories. My sole-authored scholarly monograph, Vicke Lindstrand On the Periphery, was published in the peer-reviewed Figura Nova academic series by Uppsala University Press in 2016 and is held in major international collections including the Swedish Royal Library, Yale University, Getty Research Institute, Institut national d鈥檋istoire de l鈥檃rt Paris, and the Powerhouse Museum Research Library.
Lindstrand is a significant yet historically underrepresented figure in twentieth-century Swedish and Scandinavian design history. My research repositioned Lindstrand as an important figure within Swedish and Scandinavian modernism by demonstrating how entrenched narratives and historiographic bias had marginalised his contribution. My PhD dissertation and subsequent monograph were the first studies to critically examine his work within the social, cultural, and political contexts of mid-twentieth-century Sweden. This research was disseminated through conference presentations, invited lectures, publications, and exhibitions, and was recognised through strategic funding from the Swedish Government, Swedish Royal Household, and Swedish philanthropic foundations. My publications remain the first substantial scholarly outputs dedicated to Lindstrand鈥檚 life and work.
My research has also expanded to examine Nordic-Australian design relations and Australia鈥檚 role as a site of cultural diplomacy through design in the postwar period. This work investigates how international exhibitions, migration, media, retail, and public culture contributed to the dissemination of modern design ideas and the shaping of Australian cultural identity. My research seeks to position Australia within broader global histories of design exchange and transnational modernity while making visible previously undocumented or overlooked histories held within Australian and international archives.

My Teaching
I have taught across the breadth of our Bachelor of Design and Master of Design programs, including studio, practice and theory.听
In 2017, as Deputy Head of School (Design) 91色情片 Art & Design, I initiated an innovative core of Design History and Theory courses for a new Bachelor of Design program launched in 2019. This involved an international academic recruitment process and overseeing the development of a suite of four courses. I now convene and teach across these core courses.听
