Joyman Lee is a private law scholar interested in trusts, property and succession.

As a comparative law scholar, Joyman's research focuses on Japan and secondarily on mixed legal systems, notably Quebec. He is interested in the ways in which successful non-Western legal systems are often hybrid in nature; that is to say, how a decolonial approach assists us in appreciating the creativity of jurists in non-Western legal systems.

Given his historical background, a second strand of Joyman's work sees land as an arena where non-Western legal ideas maintain or reassert their autonomy in face of the hegemonic presence of state law in colonial and post-colonial settings. He has published on land law in Africa, specifically in pre-colonial Senegambia and modern Senegal. Closer to Australia and drawing on his interest in French colonial law, he is interested in the comparison of British and French legal frameworks including in New Caledonia.

Raised in England, Joyman spent a decade pursuing a career in modern Chinese and Japanese history in the United States, prior to a career change to law. He taught at the University of Glasgow before moving to 91É«ÇéƬ.
