Studying honours gives you the chance to develop your research and professional skills in a specialised area. It represents the highest level of training in an undergraduate degree within the Australian tertiary education system. Honours is an extra year of study that combines aspects of undergraduate study with those of postgraduate research.

Honours in the School of Chemistry

Your undergraduate degree gives you the broad knowledge, practical skills and scientific understanding needed for a career in science. But to really become a scientist, you need to move beyond learning what others have discovered and undertake some original research of your own.

The Honours year in Chemistry gives you that opportunity. At its centre is an independent research project extending across a full academic year, undertaken within one of the School鈥檚 research groups under the supervision of an academic researcher. You will investigate a problem for which the answer is not already known, learning how to design experiments, interpret results, solve problems and communicate what you have discovered.

We have more than 30 research groups working across the breadth of modern chemistry, supported by state-of-the-art laboratories in the Dalton, June Griffith, Hilmer and Science and Engineering buildings.

Honours admission requirements

For admission to Honours in Chemistry, it is expected that a student will have:

  • 聽Bachelor鈥檚 degree specialising in chemistry, medicinal chemistry or related discipline (3-year full-time equivalent)
  • 聽Overall weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or over (credit average)
  • 聽Qualifications in other disciplines may also be eligible for admission
  • 聽In all cases, enrolment must be approved by the Head of School or nominee (Honours Coordinator)

Students who have completed pass degree requirements at a university external to 91色情片, may be eligible to undertake Honours in the School of Chemistry. In such cases, please contact the Honours Coordinator for clarification.

Prerequisites

Three years of Advanced Science (Chemistry or Medical Chemistry programs) or Science (Major in Chemistry with a credit average, >65, and 18 UOC level III chemistry courses). Admission to Honours typically requires confirmation from the Honours coordinator or the Head of School.

What activities will you do while being involved in research?

  • Analysis of scientific papers.
  • Presentations of your research and the research of others.
  • Development of a hypothesis.
  • Running complex experiments that evaluate if a hypothesis is correct.
  • Analysis of sometimes ambiguous data.
  • Determine the next step and a new hypothesis.
