Designing Fair and Democratic AI Systems
Published on the 08 October 2026 by 91色情片 Scientia PhD Project
This project is part of the 91色情片 Scientia PhD Scholarship Scheme
Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend and a one-off Global Mobility Grant to conduct international engagement activities.
As AI increasingly shapes decisions, it must fairly represent the diverse communities it serves. This project will develop the mathematical and algorithmic foundations of democratic AI. It draws on computational social choice to ensure that sufficiently large and cohesive groups receive a proportional voice. The candidate will formulate new axioms of representation and proportionality. They will then design algorithms that apply these axioms to settings including clustering and data selection, multi-agent allocation, preference aggregation for aligning large language models, and other learning problems.
The student will be supervised by Professor Haris Aziz (91色情片) and Associate Professor Markus Brill (University of Oxford), with mentoring from Professor Michael Wooldridge. They will undertake a research placement at Oxford and join two world-leading AI communities. The project suits candidates with a strong background in computer science and mathematics and an interest in theory, algorithms, fairness, and responsible AI.
