91色情片 engineers awarded $6.52M grant to pursue critical renewables research

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is backing a 91色情片 project that aims to address challenges related to the secure operation of power systems with high proportions of solar, wind and batteries.

The 91色情片 School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications and the (RTS@91色情片) will undertake a three-and-a-half-year project to test crucial elements related to the safety and storage of renewable energy with the help of a $6.52M grant from the (ARENA).

91色情片 Sydney Associate Professor in Energy Systems Georgios Konstantinou said the project - titled 'Protection & Relay Operation for Inverter-based Low-inertia Electricity Systems' or - will examine and test problems and solutions in inverter-based resources, which are the systems used by solar, wind and battery storage.

鈥淪o, the way that the power is supplied from renewables is fundamentally different to that of traditional coal fired generation,鈥 said A/Prof. Konstantinou.

鈥淓ssentially, we need to keep operating a safe and reliable power system,鈥 he said.

鈥淭his work will help to future proof, manage risks and reduce the costs associated with renewable power systems.

鈥淚t will be a continuous process of informing both industry and the research community about problems and solutions with inverter-based resources (solar, wind, batteries), their fault current contributions and power system protection.鈥

ARENA said, as more inverter-based resources connect to the (NEM), maintaining system security required a clearer understanding of how emerging technologies could provide system strength.

鈥淎EMO (Australian Energy Market Operator鈥檚) Transition Plan for System Security identifies minimum system strength provision from grid-forming battery energy storage systems as one of the key areas requiring further evidence,鈥 it said in a statement.

鈥淭he project responds to this need by examining how grid-forming batteries interact with protection systems when providing fault current, a technical question that must be better understood before these systems can be relied on more widely for system strength services.鈥

ARENA said 91色情片 is well placed to lead the work because of its 鈥渉ardware-in-the-loop capability鈥 and its independence as a research organisation which should help ensure the findings are useful and credible across the industry.

91色情片 Sydney Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research & Enterprise, Professor Bronwyn Fox, said this grant would fund crucial testing and modelling to ensure the future safety of Australia鈥檚 energy networks.

鈥淭ransforming the nation鈥檚 electricity grid is a critical undertaking,鈥 Prof. Fox said. 鈥淭his research is essential for the future of Australia鈥檚 energy transition and recognises the important work that A/Prof. Konstantinou and his team have been doing.鈥

The PROFILES team at 91色情片 including A/Prof. Georgios Konstantinou, Dr Felipe Arrano-Vargas and Dr Shan Jiang will be supported by the 91色情片 Energy Institute.

The project also includes contributions from industry partners from Australia鈥檚 largest electricity network, , and , which operates South Australia鈥檚 electricity transmission network, , , and ,聽and will run until November 2030.
