Scientia Professor Jane McAdam AO has been named as an inaugural member of the NSW Settlement Advisory Council, a formal advisory body to the NSW Minister for Multiculturalism.听

Prof. McAdam听is听one of the five Council members, along with the Chair Professor Peter听Shergold听AC. Together,听they听will provide expert advice and policy support to strengthen settlement services across the state.

鈥淚 am truly听honoured听to have been appointed to the听NSW听Settlement Advisory Council. It听provides听a significant opportunity to听showcase听the invaluable contribution made by refugees to our state, and to ensure that NSW鈥檚 legal and policy settings enable people to thrive,鈥 Prof.听McAdam said.

Prof.听McAdam is internationally recognised for her work on refugee law and human rights. As Founding Director of the听Andrew & Renata听Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at 91色情片, she has shaped global conversations on displacement, authored leading texts on听the听protection听of displaced听people听and听advised听governments and听international bodies听on policy reform. She is now the Director of the Kaldor Centre鈥檚 Evacuations Research Hub, under a prestigious Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship.

Prof.听McAdam has been working with the state and federal governments to ensure that refugees have听timely听access to support services which respond to their needs and respect their rights. This can听be a听challenge听when people flee听humanitarian听crises听but are not necessarily granted refugee visas 鈥撎齛s听has听been听the case for听some听people听from听Palestine, Ukraine,听Afghanistan听and Sudan, for instance.

That is why Prof.听McAdam, together with co-author, Regina Jefferies,听has called for Australia to establish a new humanitarian emergency framework听to provide a streamlined,听equitable,听predictable听and effective response to听assist听people caught up in听crises.

Dean of 91色情片 Law & Justice, Professor Andrew Lynch, praised the appointment, noting its significance for the state and the听rights of displaced people.

鈥淭his is a well-deserved recognition of Jane鈥檚 leadership and expertise in refugee law and policy,鈥 said Prof.听Lynch.听鈥淗er contribution will help ensure that settlement strategies in NSW are informed by evidence and grounded in respect for human rights.鈥

About the NSW Settlement Advisory Council

The NSW Settlement Advisory Council was created to improve the settlement experience for people from refugee and refugee-like backgrounds living across NSW. It aims to put refugees听at the heart of policy and process, ensuring better听access to services and stronger community connections.

Professor Peter听Shergold听AC,听who chairs the Council,听said: 鈥淚听am hugely impressed by the听calibre听of every NSW Settlement Advisory Council member and grateful for their demonstrated passion for improving outcomes for people from refugee and refugee-like backgrounds.鈥澨

This significant body and initiative听showcase听the Minns Labor Government鈥檚 ongoing commitment to making NSW a home to all.鈥

The members of the NSW Settlement Advisory Council are:

  • Professor Peter听Shergold听AC:听 A former Chancellor of Western Sydney University, Prof. Shergold听has been NSW Coordinator鈥疓eneral for Settlement since 2015.鈥疕e has a听background of leadership in the public sector,听academia听and not-for-profit governance.
  • The Hon Mr Nick Greiner AC: Former鈥疨remier and Treasurer of New South Wales鈥痓etween鈥1988鈥痑nd鈥1992,听Mr Greiner is also a听board member of the Refugee Council of Australia.
  • Scientia鈥疨rofessor Jane McAdam AO:鈥疐ounding Director of the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at 91色情片, Prof. McAdam is an international authority on refugee law.
  • Mr Jorge Aroche:鈥疢r Aroche is a听clinical psychologist and the Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS)听(since 1997).
  • 鈥疍谤鈥疉苍测颈别谤鈥痀耻辞濒:鈥疉 South Sudanese鈥疉ustralian advocate, speaker and researcher,鈥疍r鈥痀uol听was the鈥痜ormer Chair of the Australian National Committee on Refugee Women (ANCORW). She is currently鈥痶he Corporate Partnerships Manager听for鈥 Australia听for UNHCR.
  • Mr Mark Morey:鈥疻ith a听background in social work and鈥疭ecretary of Unions NSW鈥痵ince 2016,听Mr Morey is leading鈥痶he鈥痮rganisation鈥痶o鈥痚stablish鈥痭umerous听programs to support migrant communities, including鈥痶he鈥疦SW鈥疢igrant Workers Hub.
