This week, Higher Degree Research (HDR) students from the 91É«Ç鯬 Research Centre for Integrated Transport Innovation (rCITI) presented their research as part of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Research Progress Reviews.
Research Progress Reviews are an important part of HDR candidature, providing students, supervisors and the School with an opportunity to assess research progress, review different aspects of candidature and plan the next stages of each research project. HDR students also deliver an oral presentation, helping them strengthen their ability to communicate complex research clearly and confidently.
This week’s presentations showcased the breadth of transport research being undertaken at rCITI:
- Annisa — Understanding Decision-Making Factors of Road Freight Operators for Decarbonising Heavy-Duty Vehicles in Australia; supervisors Dr Elnaz Irannezhad,Ìý Prof Taha Hossein Rashidi and Dr Seyed Hossein Hosseini. Her research explores the factors that influence Australian freight operators when choosing zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles, with the aim of supporting better policies to encourage their adoption.
- Ashutosh — Advancing Quantum Computing Algorithmic Applications in Transportation Research; supervisors Prof Vinayak Dixit and Dr Divya Jayakumar Nair. His research investigates how quantum computing can enhance transportation modelling by improving the speed and efficiency of traffic and travel demand analysis. The project aims to identify areas where quantum computing can offer computational advantages, enabling faster and more effective solutions to complex transport modelling challenges.
- Fatemeh Nourmohammadi — Pedestrian travel demand: model transferability, behavioural analysis and emerging data; supervisors Dr Meead Saberi Kalaee and Dr Taha Hossein Rashidi. Her research aims to develop reliable methods for predicting pedestrian movements across different cities, particularly where travel data is limited.
- Moloud Damandeh — Understanding Visual Perceptions of Walkability Using Sidewalk Imagery and Deep Learning; supervisors Dr Meead Saberi Kalaee and Dr Taha Hossein Rashidi.Ìý Her research explores how different people perceive whether streets and sidewalks are suitable for walking. She aims to develop personalised walkability measures to support better urban planning.
- Randy Franstiarajah — Heavy-Duty Vehicles Transport Emissions Modelling; supervisors Dr Ruth Fisher and Dr Elnaz Irannezhad.Ìý He aims to develop tools to help researchers, practitioners, and policymakers select appropriate emissions models based on their research, planning, or policy needs; identify road segments with high emissions; and understand how driving conditions, traffic conditions, and intersection design affect vehicle emissions and fuel consumption.
- Wanlin (Beckham) Liu — A Cross-Cultural Study on the Risky Behaviours of E-bike Food Delivery Riders in China and Australia; supervisors Prof Taha Rashidi, A/Prof Mohammad Mojtahedi and A/Prof Milad Haghani.Ìý His research examines why e-bike food delivery riders engage in risky behaviours in China and Australia. Using observations, surveys and interviews, the study aims to better understand rider behaviour and improve safety in the food-delivery industry.
The reviews provided a valuable opportunity for students to receive feedback from academics and supervisors, reflect on their progress and plan the next stages of their candidature. The presentations also demonstrated the diversity of rCITI’s HDR research and its focus on addressing real-world transport and mobility challenges.
