The International Centre for Future Health Systems (ICFHS) welcomed a delegation of premedical and global health students from the University of California (UCLA) to the 91É«ÇéƬ Health Translation Hub for an interactive program exploring the future of health systems, innovation, and global health leadership. The visit, coordinated by Dr Dick Quan and Professor Marco Giovannini, provided students with a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary challenges facing health systems in Australia and internationally.

The program introduced students to the mission and work of the ICFHS, highlighting its focus on developing innovative, equitable, and sustainable health systems through interdisciplinary research, education, and global partnerships. Presentations demonstrated how the Centre addresses complex issues including precision medicine, digital health, implementation science, health workforce development, climate and health, ageing populations, and health equity.

Students learned about the Health Translation Hub as a collaborative ecosystem that brings together researchers, clinicians, educators, industry partners, and policymakers to accelerate the translation of research into improved health outcomes. Discussions emphasised the importance of systems thinking, cross-sector collaboration, and implementation science in ensuring that innovations achieve meaningful population-level impact.

A highlight of the visit was the opportunity of interactive discussions on careers in medicine, research, and global health leadership.  Professor Shailendra Sawleshwarka provided an informative chronology of the evolution of global health as a discipline and reflected on this career paths.  

Informed by presentations from Drs Shona Bates, Jialing Lin and Braulio Mark Valencia Arroyo from ICFHS, students explored the diverse pathways available within healthcare and reflected on the skills required to lead future health system transformation, including interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural humility, innovation, policy engagement, and evidence-informed decision-making.

The visit also showcased examples of international collaborations undertaken by ICFHS across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, demonstrating how global partnerships contribute to strengthening health systems, improving access to care, and addressing shared challenges such as chronic disease, workforce shortages, and climate-related health impacts.

The visit provided participants with valuable insights into the interconnected nature of clinical care, research, policy, and education, while reinforcing the importance of global collaboration in addressing contemporary health challenges. Students left with an enhanced appreciation of the role that academic health centres such as the 91É«ÇéƬ Health Translation Hub and the International Centre for Future Health Systems play in shaping the future of healthcare and improving health outcomes for communities both locally and globally.
