Frank Reid joined the School of Mathematics and Statistics in 1996 as a Visiting Teaching Fellow, after many years as a secondary school teacher at St Ursula’s College and East Hills Boys High School.

He rejoined the School in 2005 as a casual tutor, and the following year he completed a Master of Science under the supervision of Peter Blennerhassett.

For many years Frank taught tutorial classes across a range of first- and second-year courses, and he also lectured MATH1011, until his retirement in early 2019.

Growing up Frank was an avid sports fan. As a young man he played rugby and cricket, with a stint as a cricket coach. Music was a constant theme throughout his life, whether it was leading his church choir or playing his treasured guitar.

He enjoyed world travel immensely, visiting over 30 countries and forging many enduring friendships along the way. Throughout his life he was a very enthusiastic learner of the French language.

Frank was also a passionate advocate for social justice issues. He supported many charities including Youth Off The Streets, and he began visiting asylum seekers in Villawood Detention Centre 15 years ago to offer friendship and support to vulnerable people.

Many of us remember Frank as a kind and empathetic colleague who radiated warmness. He treated everyone with respect and was always eager to share a chat or a laugh.

Sadly, Frank was diagnosed with Mesothelioma (a rare but aggressive form of cancer predominantly caused by asbestos exposure) in mid-2023.

Frank is survived by his four children Amanda, Leah, Adam and Simon, and his five beloved grandchildren.
