Yuwaya Ngarra-li's Housing Project Manager and Wiradjuri researcher Samantha Rich recently started her PhD.

Sam鈥檚 PhD project, Infrastructures of Care: exploring the agency of architecture to divert Aboriginal youth from the criminal justice system, will involve collaboration with the Dharriwaa Elders Group and other Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations over the coming years, and explore the following research questions:

  1. How can architecture and short term accommodation designed for Aboriginal children and young people support care, belonging, and wellbeing?
  2. Can short term accommodation reduce recidivism and/or contact with the criminal justice system by providing short term respite from overcrowded housing?
  3. What kinds of environmental (design elements) and programmatic (activities and wrap around services) elements within short term accommodation, enable Indigenous culture support wellbeing and care for young people?
  4. How can participatory design methods create housing which cares for Aboriginal young people and help to divert them from the criminal justice system?
