Student Marlene Cai explains why she opted for a double degree.
Marlene Cai is a fourth-year Bachelor of Design/Commerce student. We asked her 5 quick questions about her choice to do a double degree.
Her advice for anyone considering going down the same route? “Study what you’re passionate about! A double degree is an incredibly flexible way to explore different interests or specialise in an area, and graduate with two qualifications in less time. Even if the disciplines seem unrelated, you’ll often find more connections and transferable skills than you expect.”
I originally thought I would study Engineering, but as I worked on my Design and Technology major project in high school, I discovered a real passion for design and creative problem solving. Commerce and Design felt like the perfect combination to develop both sides of my analytical and creative brain.
I’m grateful to have plans to work full-time as a Product Development Graduate, where I’ll be able to combine my disciplines in UI/UX and Information Systems. Alongside my corporate career, I hope to continue dabbling in graphic design, music, side projects, and other creative ventures.
The most rewarding part has been gaining access to the skills, knowledge, and connections across two very different faculties. It’s broadened my perspective and exposed me to a wide range of opportunities and career insights across diverse industries.
Commerce and Design complement each other more than people might expect, with a lot of overlap between business and design thinking. I study them concurrently because I find switching between analytical and creative work keeps things fresh. Design courses can be particularly time-intensive, so balancing them with Commerce personally helps me manage my workload and avoid creative burnout.
It’s definitely the people I’ve met. Whether through classes, societies, student ambassador work, or extracurricular activities, they’ve led to amazing friendships and unforgettable experiences - like being flown to Melbourne with two classmates to compete in a global case competition!
