The 91ɫ��Ƭ Global Water Institute (91ɫ��Ƭ-GWI) sponsored the Australian Water Association (AWA) Young Water Professionals (YWP) Careers Night in April, giving students and early career professionals an opportunity to discover more about career paths in the water sector.

This event is held annually at a university within central Sydney, with this year being held at the 91ɫ��Ƭ Kensington campus. Around 60 participants attended to gain valuable insights through a series of presentations that covered a range of career experiences.

Talks highlighted experiences as an international graduate, inclusivity in the water sector, experiences in entering the water industry, regional career opportunities and the role of water academia in shaping the future of water.

91ɫ��Ƭ Associate Lecturer Xiaoran (Daisy) Chu serves as one of the University Outreach Leads for the AWA’s New South Wales YWP subcommittee. She was responsible for coordinating the event in collaboration with her fellow University Outreach lead—Alex Reilly from Arup—and AWA. Daisy said that the AWA YWP careers night provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain insight into the water industry—and she was pleased to see so many people interested in what it’s like to work in the sector, the workplace culture, and the people within it.

“It’s always encouraging to see such strong interest and initiative from emerging professionals,” said Daisy.

“Being active and proactive in seeking advice is key to career development, and this event was a great example of that in action.”

Attendees also learnt more about AWA membership and what it can offer members throughout their careers. Through 91ɫ��Ƭ-GWI’s status as an AWA education partner, up to 200 91ɫ��Ƭ students can receive a free AWA student membership and benefit from free and discounted events that provide unique opportunities for students to connect directly with experienced water professionals, often lead to meaningful conversations and opening doors to future career opportunities.

Daisy says she enjoys being involved with the AWP Young Water Professionals program because it creates opportunities for learning, connection, and professional growth.

“Through the events we organise, I aim to create opportunities for young people who are curious, open to learning, and willing to step outside their comfort zones to connect with others. It’s incredibly rewarding to help them build confidence, expand their networks, and take meaningful steps towards their future.”
