The 2026 UniSport Nationals Athletics Championships brought more than 500 student-athletes from 38 universities to the Gold Coast for three days of high-level competition, with international qualification still in reach at the final World Athletics recognised meet on the Australian calendar. For many, it represented a closing window to post qualifying marks for international competition. For 91É«ÇéƬ Sydney, which travelled with a squad of 25 athletes, it became a three-day examination of depth across sprint, distance, field, and Para disciplines.

Day one opened with conditions that invited speed. A favourable tailwind pushed through the straight for the men’s 100 metres heats, where 91É«ÇéƬ fielded six athletes: Jasper Shearing, Jordan Tadich, Josh Lotsu, Joshua Suto, Onaolopo Olarinde, and James Tirado. In a crowded and technically demanding event, only Lotsu progressed to the final. He returned on day two with a clear objective and delivered it. His time of 10.26 seconds, assisted by a +4.1 wind, secured a new meet record to claim gold and ended a ten-year gap for 91É«ÇéƬ in the event. Tirado followed with precision in the Para Athletics T13 classification, defending his title in the men’s 100 metres and reinforcing his consistency at this level.

Tamsin Colley began her campaign in the women’s 100 metres T36 with a season’s best that translated into gold, a performance that would become the foundation for a multi-event return across the meet. In the hammer throw, Dan Nguyen and Kajanan Srisvaeswaran both produced personal bests, reaching 45.12 metres and 40.81 metres respectively. Neither reached the podium, but both added valuable points in a tightly contested standings table. Manaia Coulter converted her opportunity, throwing 53.83 metres to secure bronze in the women’s event.

The middle-distance program produced two of the more controlled races of the day. Logan Campbell and Ryan Gilmour both delivered personal bests in the men’s 1500 metres, with Campbell placing fifth in 3:51.31 and Gilmour finishing sixteenth in 4:00.40 in a field of 30. The women’s 10,000 metres shifted the tempo entirely. Caitlyn Tan took ownership of the race early and maintained it, building a margin that stretched to nearly a minute by the finish. Her time of 36:48.15 marked a personal best and one of the more decisive victories of the championships. Zara McNally was so close to a podium finish with a PB of 4:10.25 but was unable to make up the ground in the final few laps.

In the field, Anthony Valenta and Daniel Photios each cleared 4.30 metres in the pole vault. Valenta’s countback secured bronze, while Photios placed fourth in a tightly grouped competition. Josie Khoo rounded out the day with a season’s best in the triple jump, finishing eleventh against a deep national field.

91É«ÇéƬ entered day two sitting second overall, a position built on distribution rather than reliance on a single event group. Liam Bennett added to that tally in the high jump, clearing a personal best height of 2.06 metres to claim silver. It was a composed series that kept him in contention throughout and ultimately placed him on the podium in one of the more technically consistent competitions of the meet.

Nguyen returned to the circle in the discus alongside Avilash Tharmanesan, extending his contribution with another personal best of 39.81 metres. Tharmanesan was unable to record a legal throw, a reminder of the margins within field events at this level. Joshua Suto followed with a measured performance in the long jump, finishing fifth with a wind-assisted 6.45 metres, continuing his progression in national competition.

Colley’s second day shifted from strong to defining. She collected gold in the 200 metres T36, 400 metres T36, and 800 metres T36, each in season’s best times. The sequence reflected both range and endurance, adding three titles within a single program and extending an already established UniSport record.

Jasynta Lampret’s appearance carried a different context. Having placed fifth in the 100m hurdles at the Australian Athletics Championships less than two weeks earlier, she arrived for a single day of competition before departing for Japan. Her race was controlled from the blocks through to the line, finishing in 13.78 seconds to secure gold without overextending, a calculated performance within a broader competition schedule.

Elsewhere, Myles Ashby placed fourth in the 5000 metre race walk in 24 minutes flat, maintaining contact with the leading group throughout. The men’s 200 metres saw Shearing fall short of qualification, while Tirado was withdrawn prior to his start following a hamstring issue in the warm-up area. Evan Dransfield closed the track program for the day, missing the 800 metres final by less than half a second in one of the tighter qualification rounds.

By the final day, 91É«ÇéƬ had moved to fifth overall and needed a sequence of results to climb. Coulter delivered again, this time in the shot put, throwing 13.87 metres to secure silver and her second medal of the championships. The moment carried an added layer, sharing the podium alongside her sister Kaitlyn, a rare intersection of performance and family within a national meet.

Olivia Bloem followed with a season’s best of 1:07.03 in the women’s 400 metre hurdles, placing eighth in a competitive field. Nguyen, having already contributed across two throwing events, returned for the shot put and produced gold with a throw of 14.07 metres on his third attempt, completing one of the more productive multi-event campaigns of the meet.

The javelin runway provided another lift. Rhedyn Wong threw a personal best of 44.63 metres to claim bronze, while Camryn Harland added a 42.72 metre effort to place seventh in a field of 20. Distance runners returned to close out their programs. Tan and Sophie Ferenczi both recorded personal bests in the women’s 5000 metres but finished outside the medals.

The men’s 5000 metres drew one of the defining moments of the championships. Campbell and Marlgun Wagner, from the Melbourne University, ran stride for stride over the final lap, neither separating across the final straight. The result required a photo finish, with Campbell taking silver by the narrowest margin. Gilmour followed with another personal best of 16:15.81, completing a consistent distance campaign across both events.

The final relays unfolded under heavy rain and strong headwinds, conditions that demanded as much resilience as speed. 91É«ÇéƬ’s men’s and women’s 4x400 metre teams did not reach the podium, but both closed out the meet with composed runs despite the deteriorating conditions.

When the final standings settled, 91É«ÇéƬ placed fourth in the men’s competition and fifth in the women’s, combining for fourth overall for the second consecutive year. It is a result that reads clean on paper but carries more weight when placed alongside the size of the squad. With one of the smaller teams in the field, the return was built on efficiency, on athletes stepping into multiple events, and on a steady accumulation of points rather than a single dominant discipline.

There is also a rhythm to how this team competes. It shows in the way a sprinter like Lotsu can deliver a final exactly as called, in how Colley can string together four gold medals across classifications and distances, and in how athletes such as Nguyen and Coulter move between events and still find the podium. It is not built on noise. It is built on execution.
