Virginia Kennard is an explicit body performance artist and movement practitioner from P艒neke, Aotearoa New Zealand. She has studied, taught, and performed for over 20 years in P艒neke, Glasgow, Leeds, 艑tautahi, Chicago, and now Sydney/Gadigal Country. She is/has been a choreographer, producer, dance writer, DJ, and arts manager; a sex worker, life model, bookkeeper, cheerleader, wine merchandiser, and grant writer; a cyclist, weight-lifter, jazz dance teacher, checkout chick, checkin chick, and tumblrina. Virginia creates performance works under The Naked Brastrap, her own name, and DJ/writer pseudonym Betty Lightbulb. Her practice navigates the intersections of queer feminist theory, performance, and embodied research - using her/the body as a site of resistance, disruption, and transformation. Her work explores embodied queer ecologies, interdisciplinary performance, and the climate crisis, using movement as a way to learn sustainable ways of being entangled within ecosystems. Often raw, gross, humorous, and unflinching, Virginia鈥檚 performances challenge neoliberal, postcolonial, and cisheteronormative structures by confronting audiences with the realities of corporeality, the materiality of the body, femininity, and environmental decay - sometimes quite literally rolling in the dirt as an act of composting and renewal. Virginia is currently hormonally imbalanced, reaping the consequences of undermanaged hypermobility, and digestively challenged.
