Suzanne鈥檚 PhD project stages an intervention into colonial archives of Indian indenture, proposing a theory and method of archival-poetics able to articular a counter-historical account against empire. Her interdisciplinary research analyses archival material and social history through an archival-poetic approach that subverts traditional historiographical methods. In her thesis, she brings together historical research alongside case studies on contemporary art and literature to explore how historical absences, gaps, and silences in the colonial archive are reckoned with to reclaim marginalised histories. Her project focuses on the history of Girmit (indentured Indian labour) as well as her relation to this history through personal and ancestral connections.
