In her research, Janina investigates the visual representation of negatively racialised forced migrants in Australian mainstream news media, tracing how these images perpetuate power imbalances. She explores arts practices as sites of anti-racist and anti-colonial resistance, examining how they subvert and reframe dominant visual narratives. Her research interrogates how the white gaze operates through claims of objectivity and neutrality in Australian mainstream news media, functioning as a settler colonial tool that obscures state violence and erases the political agency of negatively racialised forced migrants. This work explores what anti-colonial and anti-racist representations might look like, and how challenging the white gaze requires epistemologies centred on First Nations knowledge.
