Gabriel Wong is a scholarship recipient as part of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) at the University of New South Wales node.
His scholarship focuses on mediatisation research on how emerging technologies (e.g., GenAI and apps) represent our reality. He is interested in examining technological infrastructure and socio-cultural contexts of users’ imaginations and practices with technologies.
Examples of his research ranged from examining the representation of (social) scientific knowledge as implicated by media technology to works on how narratives impact users’ experience with GenAI (e.g., chatbots, recommendation systems).
His thesis also involves conducting fieldwork to understand how environmental scientists and conservationists use digital technologies (e.g., AI camera traps and environmental monitoring sensors) to digitalise the environment (e.g., air, soil, water, weather, animals, and plant species). Specifically, he studies how these users engage with the data generated by and through these technologies, alongside their embodied senses.
Gabriel also actively shares his research, having published in the Asian Journal of Communication. He also presents his work regularly at the International Communication Association (ICA), ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) conferences and the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR).
Besides research, Gabriel is actively involved in service opportunities and lectures at the 91É«Ç鯬 School of Arts and Media. He is inspired to pay forward the invaluable guidance of his senior colleagues and the enriching time he spent mentoring students.
