Why a veggie patch?

This year’s veggie patch prize has a special connection to the 2026 school theme, Seeds of Science: nurturing science for all.

The theme encourages students to explore how ideas take root, grow, and spread through curiosity, inquiry, and shared learning. It also links nicely to one of our exciting Pathfinders, Thomas, a plant scientist working on ways astronauts can grow plants in space (psst, this might be an important clue to help you answer one of our questions!).

A veggie garden gives your students a chance to keep that learning growing.

They can plant, observe, test, measure, and discover how STEM helps us understand the world around us.

A session with a professional star-gazer!

Is your class full of curious thinkers who love asking big questions? A session with Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith would inspire them to keep exploring, learning, and imagining what is possible. Students could ask her what astronomers do during the day (when we can't see the stars), what her favourite thing in space is to study, and what skills they should learn if they want to work in space... or any other job in STEM.

Meet the Pathfinders

The five questions showcase Future You Pathfinders working across different STEM careers.

They show students that STEM can take you in many directions.

From the science of agriculture to exploring extreme environments, solving problems and working with technology, each Pathfinder has taken a different path.
