A聽successful design of engineering applications and energy-efficient systems that have a positive environmental impact often requires the聽optimising聽and聽development of聽materials that聽possess聽suitable聽mechanical properties.聽This聽is聽achieved by furthering our understanding of materials performance through characterisation, testing, failure analysis and lifetime聽prediction across聽a range of harsh and challenging environments.鈥

Our research聽at 鲍狈厂奥听School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering focuses on the design, processing,聽characterisation聽and testing of advanced structural materials such as:聽

  • next-generation metals and alloys (e.g., Ni-based superalloys,聽intermetallics, and compositionally complex materials like high-entropy alloys or bulk metallic glasses)聽
  • nanostructured as well as carbon, glass, and natural fibre-reinforced composites (thermoset and thermoplastic)聽
  • metal/ceramic matrix materials, including additively manufactured and nature-inspired composites聽

We comprehensively investigate manufacturing and processing techniques of advanced materials from polymer composite to compositionally complex metals and alloys. Our experts聽have extensive experience聽characterising聽and testing various materials classes across multiple length-scales from the nanometre to the macro-scale. This includes:聽

  • both in-situ and ex-situ studies to evaluate deformation聽
  • damage evolution and failure during testing and after service聽
  • the design of advanced characterisation techniques for mechanical performance evaluation in aggressive environments such as corrosive and oxidizing media聽
  • crack propagation and fatigue life studies of laminated nano- and polymer composites, metallic materials and聽intermetallics聽in temperature聽ranges聽from cryogenic to鈥1500掳C
