The Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) at 91色情片 Sydney led the establishment of Dementias Platform Australia (DPAU), which facilitates data sharing between Australian and international dementia researchers, significantly enhancing productivity and reusability of data from Contributing Research Studies (CRS). Joining data across studies and modalities within one virtual space allows for the large samples and multimodal analyses required in the 鈥榦mics鈥 era.聽聽
Dementia affects all populations across the globe, with an estimated global prevalence of 50 million individuals. Recognising the global reach of the dementia, DPAU launched in 2021 with data from CHeBA鈥檚 , comprising 60 cohort studies from 38 countries, involving more than 180,000 individual research participants. DPAU also hosts the data governed by the CHeBA Research Bank, including cohort studies, such as the (MAS), (SCS) and the (OATS). We aim to rapidly add data from other studies related to brain ageing conducted in Australia and beyond, in particular Asia. DPAU provides easy, but secure, access and the ability to combine datasets, with applicability in and beyond the dementia research community.
Initially, DPAU will facilitate access to tabular data only, but we recognise the significant potential of sharing of more complex imaging and genetics data within and across studies. Combining data across multiple disciplines has already yielded unique and valuable insight into biomarkers and biological pathways relevant to the risk for, and diagnosis and progression of, dementia. The aim of DPAU is to next expand our capability to include the deposit and analysis of imaging and genetics data in the online environment.
Objective and Scope
The objective of DPAU is to聽support聽researcher聽access to data聽from聽multiple Contributing Research Studies (CRS)聽and enable聽new insights into ageing,聽ageing-related聽diseases聽and dementia risk, with the aim of聽transforming the epidemiology of ageing and dementia.聽
The challenges posed by dementia聽are聽undeniably聽complex. Addressing them requires many smaller pieces of a puzzle to come together to increase our understanding of brain function and of the risks聽that聽genetic factors and life events pose to聽healthy聽brain ageing. While the contribution of one research participant, one researcher, or one study, is often modest, the ability to combine data across many studies has a聽potential not聽yet聽fully聽realised.聽DPAU is collecting and aggregating聽CRS data on physical and brain health collected from research participants, health services and government agencies. It provides an efficient and auditable process for securely storing,聽sharing聽and analysing sensitive data to accelerate the understanding of dementia and improve diagnosis and treatment.聽
Utilising the template developed by our partner,聽Dementias Platform聽UK (DPUK), and聽Secure聽eResearch聽Platform聽(SeRP)聽technology deployed at Monash University,聽DPAU provides聽a platform to:聽聽
- enhance聽data discovery functionality,聽聽
- provide聽high-quality data curation,聽聽
- mediate data access via an auditable and efficient approval process adaptable to be compliant with any relevant governance requirement,聽聽
- provide聽secure data transfer function聽and reduce the need for continued聽data transfer between research groups, and聽聽
- provide聽virtual workspaces for analysing data.聽
DPAU hosted on聽Monash聽SeRP聽provides an聽environment operating to the highest data protection standards,聽meaning聽research聽participants and researchers can be聽confident聽that the data are managed securely and responsibly,聽thereby聽maintaining privacy whilst maximising scientific value. Monash SeRP is a secure, trusted and scalable environment for data sharing, governance, control and management services for researchers. For studies conducted in Australia, DPAU聽provides an opportunity to share Australian data without聽the聽potential risks associated with sharing data outside of the Australian jurisdiction.聽
Initially, DPAU will facilitate access to 鈥渇lat-file鈥 data only, but we recognise the significant potential of sharing of more complex imaging and genetics data within and across studies.
DPAU is envisaged to complement the DPUK and other satellite dementias platforms around the globe. While a distributed set of platforms can assist in retaining data sovereignty, they also have the potential to open up even further the sharing of research data across platforms within a common SeRP virtual workspace.聽
