New to Convo Cafe or just curious how it all works? Below you'll find everything you need to know – from what happens in a session to how to sign up. Can't find what you're looking for? Reach out and we'll help you sort it out.
Convo Cafe is a program designed to help students build confidence in spoken English. We aim to help students form friendships with other 91É«Ç鯬 students and develop practical conversation skills for use both within university and beyond it.
These are a casual place to come together and practise English with other non-native speakers. We talk about what interests us, play English learning games, do oral skills building activities and have a good time. A student mentor is there to keep the conversation flowing and make sure everyone feels comfortable, so you can relax, enjoy yourself, and meet new people.
Students report gaining confidence in English and in speaking up in class, improving vocabulary and local slang, and a feeling of relaxation when they attend.
When: Sessions run at different times each week, and the schedule changes each term. They run from Week 2 to Week 6, leaving you that crucial study time in the later weeks.
Where: Classes are held at multiple locations around campus. The schedule is sent by email once you've signed up to the mailing list.
This program is run by the School of Social Sciences and aims to prioritise students taking Social Sciences subjects or who are Majoring, Minoring, Mastering or Researching in Social Sciences. Open to students of all degree levels.Â
However, if you, or a friend you would like to bring along are from a different school or faculty, please simply note this in the registration form, or send us an email 😊
Please double-check your details on the sign-up form. New sign-ups are included in the outreach email each Monday, ahead of that week's classes.
You're welcome to attend as many classes as you like during the term. It's important to RSVP each week, and to let us know if you can't make it.
Sessions are capped at 8 students, so everyone has a chance to contribute.
That's up to you – some weeks you might focus on listening, other weeks you might have a story to share. Either way, participating means actively listening, asking questions, and putting the phone away for the hour.
Participation certificates are available for attending multiple classes, these are a great way to show future employers that you are a motivated learner and take initiative in improving English!
Wonderful! All Convo Cafe sessions are run by SOSS students, and we welcome new mentors each term. To mentor, you should have a good level of English and be keen to contribute to a lively campus community through the art of conversation. Please contact convocafesoss@unsw.edu.au
The Convo Cafe brings together students from various backgrounds to encourage networking and friendship, while fostering continuing conversation and communication development. We are always looking for mentors to deliver our conversation sessions.
