Artist statement
My watercolour series explores recipes as a technology for cultural transmission. I made this artwork for 2 reasons:
- To document the imagery of my maternal grandmother鈥檚 cooking.
- To depict my personal feelings of reverence and celebration for the enduring legacy of Cantonese immigrant culture.
Each painting becomes archival technology, documenting and celebrating her domestic sphere. When arranged together, they become a figurative and literal collage/shrine; a celebratory memento mori.
By making this piece, I ask my audience 鈥淲hat knowledges does your family possess? And would you explore them again if given the chance?鈥.
