Artist statement

Drawing on my adolescent memories of evangelical Christian spaces, which aimed to further the ‘feeling’ of spirituality, Congregation explores my experiences in the world of secular, and ‘hedonistic’ festivals - where music, dancing, drugs, light and space generate a comparable sensation of transcendence.

These psychedelic visions identify a humorous and conceptually complex link to those spiritual visions I experienced in other spaces. The bare tent is a shared vessel passed between groups to shelter and isolate each congregation, with communities of people disconnected by doctrine and ‘morality’, yet similarly seeking to access something beyond ordinary human life.
