Artist statement

Container, Dissipator explores the connection between relocation and memory, presenting nostalgia as a distortion of past experiences.

After moving from Seoul to Wollongong, I found myself longing for the cold steel of the city. Like rust and stains, my recollections of Seoul have corroded into a nostalgic obsession with industrialisation.

Taking the form of industrial components and structures, the work contains layers of ink-wash paintings that resemble the patina of urban environments. Combining traditional practices of meok on hanji with industrial hardware, the work reflects the clash of memories and the synthesis of nostalgia.
