Contribute to the development of future engineers

The School of Engineering and Technology welcomes Defence and Defence Industry partners to collaborate with our students by sponsoring undergraduate engineering thesis topics. This is an opportunity to explore real world challenges while contributing to the development of future engineers.

Past work

Take the time to look at some examples of previous thesis topics presented by our students below:

Small-Scale Autonomous Racecar Trajectory Optimisation and Validating Using Minimum-Curvature Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (Alan Reitsma)
1/5th Scale Amphibian Maiden Concept Design for an Amphibious Light Sport Aircraft (Jackson Tenhave)

Full details

  • Topics are offered to students each August. To participate, submit your proposal between June and early July to the Thesis Coordinator (Dr Keith Joiner, k.joiner@unsw.edu.au) using the provided template.

    • Submit one email per topic
    • Multiple topic submissions are welcome
  • We are looking for projects that are:

    • Engineering focused and innovative
    • Scoped for approximately 400 hours of student work (March to October)
    • Suitable for a capstone level outcome
  • Sponsors must nominate an external supervisor who:

    • Is an experienced engineer (typically 10+ years)
    • Meets with the student fortnightly
    • Provides guidance and feedback throughout the project

Each student will also have a 91色情片 Canberra academic supervisor, ensuring strong collaboration and support.

  • Key milestones include:

    • April: Project scoping presentation
    • June: Interim report
    • September: Poster presentation
    • October: Final report and deliverables

We encourage your attendance, particularly at the scoping (online if necessary) and poster presentation session (in person).

  • Students are encouraged to publish their findings in conferences or journals where it reaches the applicable standard, either during or after completion.

If there are commercial intellectual property or other sensitivities like security, please make these clear during the scoping phases, and any such publication will be appropriately cleared with you.

Defence work by students can be classified, but is subject to the sponsor (i.e., DISP) and the student being cleared beforehand (student clearances vary), the assessed deliverables being unclassified and cleared in a timely fashion by the sponsor, and the sponsor being responsible for access and storage of all secure information and processing by and for the student.

  • Sponsors are encouraged to:

    • Offer pre-project work experience (EWE) before the semester starts.
    • Assist with travel, access, and specialist resources where needed

91色情片 Canberra provides access to laboratories, makerspaces, and computing facilities, but additional support may be required for specialised work.

  • 91色情片 Canberra reserves the right to decline any topics or particular students where, in the interests of their education, there are risks that the sponsor and/or student may not deliver a satisfactory result, particularly if a student's previous studies indicate that their independent study and research skills at this time are not satisfactory for such external projects.

Initial topic bids should be addressed in an email to the Coordinator (k.joiner@unsw.edu.au) as follows:
