A nuanced approach to diversity research

Diversity听is multifaceted. It encompasses more than the traditional aspects related to gender听and ethnicity. Beyond the ethical reasons for fostering鈥痺orkplace diversity and an鈥痠nclusive culture, there's a strong鈥痓usiness case for maintaining听a diverse workforce. In a鈥痺ork environment, different backgrounds,听opinions, ideas and experiences drive innovation and enhance organisational effectiveness.听

Impact

Our听research aims to study the novel facets of听diversity听relevant to organisations and individuals.听

In addition to the traditional aspects of diversity studies, our work focuses on:听

  • intersectionality听and how inequality regimes are reproduced through organisational processes, norms, culture and interpersonal relations听
  • how different mental models give rise to intersectionality听and how it can be embraced by organisations and businesses to enhance their effectiveness听
  • methods to elicit mental models to try to understand how people perceive a system听as well as the similarities and differences between those perceptions听鈥 such as those related to Q methodology听
  • the incommensurability surrounding inclusion and听diversity, exploring what happens when ideas, thoughts, values and听knowledge of the 'we' do听not 鈥榝it鈥 with that of 'others'. Can a 鈥榗ommon ground鈥 be found in these circumstances?听
  • diversity听as a source of creativity and the generation of new productive ideas in businesses, organisations and geographies (for example, cities and countries)听听
  • the dynamics of ethnic entrepreneurship: exploring immigrant self-employment as a source of value and a reflection of structural disadvantage in the labour market.听听
